Those living in Harare’s rich suburbs have come to rely on Ecocash Holdings’ CleanCity as Harare City Council has been incapacitated for the past 3 or so years and has therefore not been able to offer refuse collection services. Now there is nowhere to turn as CleanCity has suspended its services because it felt that its customers would no longer be able to afford the new fees being charged at Pomona dumping grounds by a company linked to Delish Nungawaya of Drax fame. Each truck now has to pay the company owned by Delish US$40 in order to gain access to the dumping ground. It is not clear how the deal with the company was reached or whether the deal is in the public interest.

This is what CleanCity had to say on the issue:

PUBLIC NOTICE

Suspension of Waste Collection Services

The public is advised that we have suspended our waste management and waste disposal services in Harare with effect from 25 May 2022. The recent change in the terms of trade at the Pomona Waste Facilities have left the household and corporate clients that we serve nable to afford the service. In turn, this has impaced the viablity of our waste disposal business. The company will update the public and its valued clients of any further developements.
