After last week’s price surge chicken prices are still on an upward trend as you would expect in a hyperinflationary environment. However, this week’s price increases were more subdued.
We couldn’t help but notice that just like with beef, there seems to be a general decrease in the quantity of chicken available for sale. Last week Pick N Pay’s branded chicken was the cheapest although Pick N Pay shops were running low on it. This week we couldn’t find it anyway.
We also mentioned seeing a couple stuffing their trolley full of whole-bird chicken. Well, this week there was hardly any full birds available for sale in the supermarkets we surveyed. Could be that couple went around and bought it all! Or there is just a general shortage.
