We are now well into the cyclone season in Zimbabwe and if you live in areas that are prone to cyclones and cyclone damage it is crucial to take precautions. It is important to note that deaths and injuries during cyclones do not all necessarily come from the storm itself. Some deaths are only indirectly related to the storm some deaths for example are a result of electrical faults during storms. Which is why it’s important to stay safe from electrical accidents. It is with this in mind that the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has issued a public notice urging people to be careful during the period of Moderate Tropical Storm Freddy.

It is important to remember the devastating effects of Cyclone Idai, which caused a high death toll mainly due to poor response. Therefore, it is essential to take precautions seriously and follow the guidelines set out by ZETDC.

The notice advises people to take extra care both indoors and outdoors. For indoor safety, ZETDC suggests unplugging sensitive electronic equipment before the storm and turning off any electronic appliances that were on before the power was lost. If you must use electrical appliances during the storm, always dry your hands before touching them, and ensure no part of the appliance comes into contact with water. If there is an electrical fire, never use water, but use a multipurpose fire extinguisher instead.

Regarding outdoor safety, ZETDC advises people to call the ZETDC National Contact Centre on 704 to report fallen power lines. All fallen power lines must be treated as live and should not be tampered with during a rainstorm. Waterbodies in contact with fallen power lines may be energized, so it is best to avoid them to prevent electrocution. Avoid mowing wet grass with an electric mower, and do not stand under trees or electrical power lines during the rain. If fallen lines come into contact with your vehicle, remain inside and contact 704 for immediate help. It is also important to use socket outlet covers for all outdoor sockets and ensure all cables are well-insulated, avoiding the use of loosely connected or frayed cables.

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has confirmed that Cyclone Freddy is in the Mozambique channel, slowly heading towards the southeastern parts of Mozambique. Landfall is expected overnight, with its cloud bands spreading to cover a radius of 500km beyond the eye of the storm.

The advice from the ZETDC should not just guide you through Cyclone Freddy, as we enter cyclone season, it is vital to be aware of the dangers and take necessary precautions to stay safe. It is best to follow ZETDC’s guidelines to prevent electrical accidents and report any fallen power lines to the National Contact Centre. Let us not forget the devastating effects of Cyclone Idai and ensure we are adequately prepared for any future cyclones.
