Yesterday South Africa which now has over 400 officially confirmed coronavirus cases, took drastic steps which include a 21 day lockdown in a bid to stop the disease from spreading. The South African president even called upon the army to help the South African Police to enforce this lockdown, something that is very rare in South Africa.

Key points from Cyril Ramaphosa’s shutdown speech

  1. Reiterate that most effective way to help infection is to change basic behaviours.
  2. Staying home, cancelling gatherings and avoiding people help curb the spread of the virus.
  3. Immediate swift and extraordinary action is required.
  4. Fundamental task is to curb the spread. Health services cannot be strained.
  5. Next few days are crucial.
  6. Decided to enforce lockdown from Midnight 26 March 2020.

  11. Production and distribution
  12. Essential banking services
  13. Power
  14. Laboratory services
  15. Hygiene services
  16. People will not be allowed to move unless buying food and medical supplies.
  17. JSE not affected. Trading continues.
  18. Malls and clothing stores to be closed.
  19. Those who can operate remotely must do so.
  20. Defence force deployed to help police.
  21. Public health management programme to perform screening. Initial focus on high density and high-risk areas.
  22. Centralised treatment for severe cases.
  23. Decentralised treatment for mild cases.
  24. Resident arriving from high-risk countries will face quarantine of 14 days.
  25. International flights from Lanseria suspended.
  26. International travellers will be turned away.
