Zimbabwe has suffered due to erratic rainfall patterns that saw us going through what can be described as droughts in recent years. The cost for that has been high with us enduring severe mealie-meal shortages and a shocking 18-19 hours without electricity. The rains have been good this year. We have received constant rain since December with only a few dry spells in-between. This will be no doubt good for our farmers but for some it means they will no longer be living in their houses due to flooding.

The Ministry of Information has shared pictures showing people’s houses in Gweru flooded.

People built on wetlands?

As already said we haven’t seen the kind of rain we are seeing now in years. With reduced rain people have started building in low lying areas and on wetlands. With increased rainfall we have heard lots of reports of flooding in low lying areas including the Low-veld.
