The Zimbabwean internet landscape is undergoing a seismic shift, with Econet leading the charge. As Starlink’s arrival looms, Econet has unveiled a masterstroke: their 5G SmartBiz packages which are now even more affordable thanks to a price reduction earlier this month. These offerings are not just competitive; they’re revolutionary, providing uncapped internet at unprecedented prices. Just like Starlink, we believe these packages are going to make high-speed internet accessible to a much wider population.
The Dawn of Affordable Uncapped Internet
For years, Zimbabweans have grappled with the high cost of mobile data, often limiting their internet usage to essential communication platforms like WhatsApp. Econet and NetOne, the two major players, offered capped packages with a hefty price tag per gigabyte. The result? A digitally stunted environment where most users couldn’t afford to explore the vast potential of the internet beyond basic WhatsApp messaging.
Econet’s introduction of uncapped SmartBiz packages in February 2024 marked a turning point. These packages, initially priced between US$70 and US$192 per month, offered a glimmer of hope for affordable, unrestricted internet access. But Econet didn’t stop there. In August 2024, they slashed prices by approximately 25%, making their SmartBiz 5 package available for a mere US$45 per month – a price point directly challenging the likes of Starlink.
Name | Package | Old Price (February 2024) US$ | Current Price (Starting August 2024) US$ |
SmartBiz 5 | 5 Mbps | 70 | 45 |
SmartBiz 10 | 10 Mbps | 112 | 87 |
SmartBiz 20 | 20 Mbps | 192 | 167 |
The new US$45 price point for unlimited 5 Mbps internet is no coincidence – it’s a direct challenge to Starlink’s anticipated pricing.
You do not have to buy a router or pay for installation
Initially, accessing SmartBiz required purchasing a US$200 router from Econet, making the entry cost prohibitive for many. In a consumer-friendly move, Econet now offers the 5G SIM card for just US$2. This flexibility allows users to use the SIM in their phones or existing routers, dramatically reducing the entry barrier.
This means you no longer need to buy a router at all. You can just put the line in your iTel dual SIM, and hotspot your devices without going through any hoops. This move opens up a world of possibilities. While getting a 5G router will provide optimal speeds, the line has a 4G fallback option ensuring a seamless experience even on older devices.
Getting Connected
To acquire a SmartBiz line, you’ll need:
- US$47 (US$45 for the package + US$2 for the SIM)
- Proof of residence (an affidavit is acceptable for lodgers)
Visit any Econet shop with these requirements. Activation typically occurs within an hour, though it may take up to 24 hours.
The Econet SmartBiz lines are not geo-locked
Unlike some competitors’ offerings, SmartBiz lines are not geo-locked. This means you can use your connection at home, work, or while travelling – a significant advantage over geo-restricted services.
Impressive speeds
Early speed tests have shown remarkable results, with some users reporting downloads of up to 160 Mbps. While advertised speeds range from 5 to 20 Mbps, many users are currently experiencing speeds well above these thresholds. Uncapped internet is only as good as its speed, and Econet seems to be delivering on that front. While these speeds might fluctuate as more users come on board, Econet’s robust infrastructure suggests that they are well-equipped to handle the surge in demand, at least in the initial stages.
How will the competition react?
Econet’s aggressive pricing strategy has sent ripples through the Zimbabwean internet market. TelOne, with its Blaze LTE package, is already making waves in Bulawayo, offering speeds exceeding 100 Mbps at competitive prices. It’s only a matter of time before NetOne, the other major player, follows suit with its own uncapped offerings to avoid being left behind.
This healthy competition is excellent news for consumers. With multiple providers vying for their attention, users can expect even more competitive pricing, improved services, and a wider range of options to choose from.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I get an Econet 5G SmartBiz SIM card?
A: Visit any Econet shop with your ID and proof of residence (a commissioner of oaths affidavit will suffice for lodgers). You’ll need to pay an initial US$47 for the SIM card and your chosen package. The SIM card is usually activated within an hour, but it might take up to 24 hours in some cases.
Q: Can I use the 5G SIM card in any device?
A: While the SIM card is 5G-enabled, it also works with 4G/LTE devices including the humble iTel. You will get the best speeds with a 5G-compatible device, but you can still enjoy a seamless experience on 4G.
Q: Is the service geo-locked?
A: No, unlike some other uncapped LTE packages in Zimbabwe, Econet’s SmartBiz is not geo-locked. You can use it anywhere within Econet’s coverage area.
Q: Can I share the connection with multiple devices?
A: Yes, you can use your phone as a hotspot or use a compatible router to share the connection.
Econet’s SmartBiz packages represent a significant leap forward in Zimbabwe’s internet accessibility. By offering uncapped, high-speed internet at affordable prices, Econet is not just competing with potential new entrants like Starlink – they’re reshaping the entire market. As other providers respond, Zimbabwean consumers stand to benefit from increased competition, better services, and more affordable internet access.

I’m currently paying $70 for 5mbps but next week, I’ll be buying Starlink, come rain, come thunder.
Starlink remains a strong choice for internet connectivity. We have also provided a comprehensive guide on what you need to know about Starlink’s impending arrival.
We believe that the recent price reductions in the market are largely influenced by Starlink’s arrival on the scene.
You didn’t have to lie I have the smartbiz those are not the speeds stop lying to people because you are paid that is pathetic
Good day,
In fact, Econet can provide even faster speeds on 5G in certain locations.
Remember starlink you install it anyway and you don’t need 5g or 4g
We will never forget Starlink. It has brought us this bountiful fiesta of reasonably priced internet.
Bought the sim yesterday and the speeds have been dismal. I have a 5G capable device and no matter how much you crank it up, these smartbiz lines won’t go into 5G. Thought it was my location but tried in different places including the very heart of Harare CBD but no. What’s even more interesting is that the ordinary buddie line will easily go into 5G and move with greater speeds than this smartbiz.
In actual fact, you’ll not even get consistent 4G service. Most of the times it switches down to 3G and even 2G!!
I’ve tried calling customer support hoping for a resolution but have been tossed around since yesterday. Even fed empty promises that they’ll give feedback in 24 hours but they didn’t. I’m beyond disappointed given I’d cancelled my usual ZOL subscription to opt for this.
If they want to compete with Starlink this is no way to introduce their “competitive package.” And I’m mostly annoyed by the false advertising saying they’ll give you 5G service when the line doesn’t even allow you to switch to 5G.
Should my challenge be resolved and I experience better service then I’ll certainly come back here with an additional comment giving an update but until then I give Smartbiz a rating of 1 out of 5. It is my hope they really improve on this otherwise 1) most people won’t renew their subscriptions 2) we will welcome Starlink and any other alternative with open hands.
