Exciting news for internet users in Zimbabwe: Starlink, the satellite internet service created by SpaceX, is planning to officially launch in the country on September 1st, 2024. This was revealed by those “who are in the know”. Strangely though, when our friends at Techzim contacted POTRAZ, the regulator in charge of Telecoms in Zimbabwe they were told that Starlink had not yet been granted the licence to operate in Zimbabwe. This leaves us to wonder how exactly this is planned launch is going to be executed. Could it be that they will be partnering with another local operator? We know IMC has already been granted a licence.

The government has also seemingly left the door open for other Telcos to partner with Starlink. They recently revealed that IMC no longer had the exclusive right to partner with Starlink. We know for example that Dandemutande, the guys behind Utande, were reportedly interested in partnering with Starlink though we are not sure what the status of that partnership is. All know is that Starlink has not changed their planned launch date for Zimbabwe and there are indications behind the scenes to suggest they have advanced plans to launch in Zimbabwe.

The Countdown Begins

Just earlier today, we reported on strong indications that Starlink was preparing for its Zimbabwe debut. Willard Shoko, a respected Starlink expert in Zimbabwe, uncovered that Starlink had been provisioned with Zimbabwean IP addresses, signaling final launch preparations. Now, we can confirm the exact launch date, marking a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s internet connectivity landscape.

What Does the Official Launch Mean for Current Starlink Users?

If you’ve been using a Starlink kit on roaming (illegally) in Zimbabwe, if Starlin launches as rumours are saying on September 1st this will only be good news. You’ll no longer need to rely on the roaming workaround which POTRAZ has repeatedly said is illegal. Instead, you will be able to log into your Starlink account and update your service address to your actual Zimbabwean location. This change will likely result in a lower monthly bill, as you’ll no longer incur the US$10-30 roaming fee on top of your regular service charge.

For New Customers

If the launch comes on September 1st, you will be able to purchase Starlink equipment directly from the official website and have it delivered to your Zimbabwean address. No more complicated workarounds or relying on resellers.

For those who’ve been patiently waiting for the official launch, the time to act is now! Secure your spot at the front of the line by placing a pre-order on the Starlink website. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Visit the Starlink website: Head over to https://www.starlink.com/
  2. Enter your details: Provide your address, personal information, and a valid Visa or MasterCard. Ensure your card can handle a US$10 authorization charge (this will be deducted from your first bill).
  3. Prepare for payment: Have at least US$600 available on your card by September 1st. Starlink will process your order and deduct the full amount for the kit and the first month’s service.

Which Starlink Kit Should You Choose?

While pricing and availability for Zimbabwe are yet to be officially confirmed, here are the current Starlink kit options available in other regions:

  • Starlink Mini: The most affordable option, priced around US$199 per month.
  • Standard Starlink Dishy: Currently retailing for around US$350 in Malawi.
  • Starlink Gen 2 Kit: A more powerful option, priced at US$599 in the US. Its availability in Africa is yet to be determined.

Why Wait for the Official Launch?

While some might be tempted to purchase from resellers, waiting for the official launch offers several advantages:

  • Cost Savings: Avoid the hefty US$200 activation fee imposed on kits purchased outside Zimbabwe.
  • Reliable Support: Enjoy peace of mind knowing you have direct access to Starlink’s customer support.
  • Risk Mitigation: Eliminate the potential for service disruptions, warranty issues, and other complications often associated with reseller purchases.

The Future of Connectivity in Zimbabwe

Starlink’s arrival in Zimbabwe would mark a significant leap forward in bridging the digital divide. With its high-speed, low-latency internet service, Starlink has the potential to empower businesses, revolutionize education, and connect communities across even the most remote corners of the nation. The competition had already been on notice ever since the service launched in neighboring countries.
