Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor John Mangudya has bemoaned the fact that Zimbabwe is importing everything from abroad from maize to carrots. This he said has meant that there is constant pressure on scarce foreign currency.

The government can only blame itself

The Zimbabwean government can blame only itself for the situation we find ourselves in. Their policies or lack thereof and corruption has led to a constant decline in industry capacity utilisation ever since the fall of the Government of National Unity.

An overbearing government has also failed to revive the agricultural sector which has been in constant decline. Agriculture in the age of climate change requires the sort of attention and skill that is currently lacking in Zimbabwe’s “new farmers.” Bureaucratic planning, a flawed land tenure, corruption and lack of foreign currency have all conspired to see it fail.

As the economic crisis deepens expect Zimbabweans to import more non-essentials and just about everything.
