Yesterday Eskom, South Africa’s power utility, announced that it would now be going to stage 2 load-shedding. This follows a drop in power generation due to generator breakdowns. This means Zimbabweans must also brace for increased load-shedding.

Ever since we entered the current crisis we have become reliant on neighbours to supply us with power. ZESA imports about 400 MW of power from Eskom to mitigate our own crippling power crisis. In short, if Eskom is going to stage 2 load shedding we are also going to stage 2 load-shedding. Theirs is nothing but a few hours of power cuts. Ours mean 18 hours without power.

Companies seek shelter in solar

Faced with an unreliable power partner in ZESA, a lot of businesses are turning to solar to close the gap and to become less reliant on ZESA. Recently Schweppes Zimbabwe commissioned a 1 MW rooftop powerplant that will allow them to minimise idle hours.
